Monel 400® or Alloy 400 (UNS N04400) is a nickel-copper alloy with excellent corrosion resistance,
medium/high strength, and excellent weldability. Is Alloy 400 the
same as Monel 400? Yes, the alloy 400 is the same as the Monel 400. Special Metals holds the Monel trade name, so unless you are
special Metals, if you produce this grade, it is Alloy 400. The Monel 400 is resistant to various corrosion conditions. For example, acidic
applications involving hydrofluoric acid, brine, sulfuric acid and
alkali. Alloy 400 can only be hardened by cold working. The Monel 400 is used in many industries, especially Marine and chemical
processing, due to its excellent corrosion resistance.
Monel 400 has excellent mechanical properties at sub-zero temperatures. Alloy 400 increases in strength and hardness but slightly decreases in
impact resistance or ductility. 400 can maintain toughness over a
wide range of temperatures.
Monel 400 is more resistant to oxidative attack under most conditions than
other higher copper alloys. These properties of Alloy 400 make it
suitable for a variety of environments, especially Marine
environments
